Isle of Man NI numbers

Postby payrollhelp » 04 Mar 2010, 10:07

A visitor has asked for the following question to be posted:

Could you please clarify – Manx NI numbers are accepted in the UK presumably – as it is stated in our Contributions leaflets that UK numbers are accepted by Manx DHSS Contributions offices.

I am anxious to check this as have family moving from IOM to Durham and when the daughter of a friend moved from IOM to Bournemouth (with a letter from our Contributions office stating her NI number was accepted in UK) the local DSS office disputed this – the girl could not get a job - she had the offer of a job but could not commence this without giving NI number which she did not have due to the UK not accepting the IOM number – so to make a long story short girl ended up losing her flat, being in debt, being sent food parcels from mum in IOM, getting ‘crisis loans’ which she would never had needed had her NI number been sorted out – (and is now is being told she has to repay the crisis loans which she shouldn’t have needed anyway). I have tried to find something in writing on the various websites stating what the situation is re: NI numbers from IOM – all I have found is in the NI38 leaflet (Social Security Abroad) on page 1 which states “This leaflet does not apply to everyone. If you are: going to Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man, you don’t need this leaflet because the social security systems there are linked to the UK’s and vice versa”.

Please could you help me get some clarification on this.

According to HMRC website, NINO from the IOM are valid in the UK.

They are all prefixed with the letters MA

Having lived and worked in the UK for the past 30+ years using an IOM NINO, a question has arisen who pays my pension when I retire ? Do I need to apply to IOM or will UK pay it ?

I am waiting for clarification from the DWP and HMRC on these questions.

The DWP has responded with the following answer to the question about who pays the pension on retirement.
Basically the territory where the pensioner resides handles the State Pension claim and makes payment taking into account NICs paid in the UK and/or the Isle of Man

Returning to the initial question about the use of IOM NI mumbers in the UK, HRMC has provided the following comment:
I can confirm that Isle of Man issued NI numbers, with the prefix MA, can be used in the UK. For employer information, this is confirmed on the quality standard on the HMRC website at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ebu/qual_stand_09.pdf.
