Tax matters
You should visit or phone the HMRC office that holds your tax records. This should be your current employer’s tax office. However, if you have recently changed jobs, your records may still be with your former employer’s tax office.

Employment terms and conditions
If you have a grievance or problem relating to any aspect of your relationship with your employer, or previous employer, always read your “contract”, i.e. any document that your employer has given you explaining the terms and conditions, before talking to anyone. Those documents may well explain why your employer has acted in a particular way. If you employer has never given you any documents, you should ask your employer for the “written particulars” of your terms and conditions.
When you understand the problem clearly, you may have one or more of the following options:
(1) If your employer provides a legal helpline, or you have an insurance policy that provides such a service, talk to them.
(2) If you are a member of a trade union, speak to your shop steward or other official, or contact the union’s helpline.
(3) Call in at, or make an appointment with, a local legal advice centre. You can look for your local centres in Yellow Pages. Local authorities often provide such services. A national chain of advice centres is run by the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). You can find information about the CAB here and here.
