Wednesday, April 11th, 2012We do not know whether we are going to have a petrol shortage during the coming months but it certainly could come about as a result of industrial action by delivery drivers or by events in the Middle East. Time to think and plan therefore. Could you operate your plant? Will supplies be affected? Could you find some way to receive deliveries and deliver goods and services? And what about getting your employees to work? You really should get your colleagues together to identify problems and seek solutions so as to minimise disruption to your operations. The solutions will of course reflect the nature of your organisation.
Personnel problems certainly will loom large. What issues would you have to consider if you ask employees to work from home? How will you treat employees who are absent because they have no petrol and public transport is limited? And what are you entitled or required to do if you cannot provide your employees with work? These problems require a working knowledge of employment law, especially as it affects contracts of employment, so make sure that your management staff are adequately trained such that they can react promptly as difficulties arise.
