The Learn Centre Payroll, HR and Managing People Conference
Monday, March 5th, 2012The setting was truly beautiful – the lovely, spacious and welcoming Menzies Welcombe Spa and Golf Club in Stratford-upon-Avon. Plus, the sun came out for us, so as well as interesting workshops and plenary sessions; we could wander the grounds and soak up the sun as well!
As you can imagine, there was plenty to talk about at our Conference. 2012 was acknowledged by all as a year that payroll and HR professionals would not easily forget, as we prepare excitedly for RTI and Auto-Enrolment. Our speakers presented this information in a way that was easy to follow plus, importantly, gave delegates the pointers that were required to take back to the workplace and implement with colleagues.
However, as well as the ‘excitement’ that RTI and Auto-Enrolment cause, there was also the recognition that life does go on and, much as we would like to stop, normal payroll operations have to continue. Therefore, there were sessions on the tax, NICs, Statutory Payment and Employment Law changes for 2012/13 plus more hand-on workshops looking at things such as dispensations and PSAs, salary sacrifice schemes, software selection, managing grievances, remote workers and Irish legislation. All in all, there was something to suit everyone and I was pleased to see a positive response from all delegates.
I was also pleased to be able to take things away from the Conference. My top two lessons learned were:
Payroll and HR need to communicate more with each other, recognising that forthcoming changes present different challenges to each department
Tidy my desk on a Friday afternoon in preparation for Monday. It’s amazing the rubbish that I found when I attempted this for the first time
I look forward to seeing old and new delegates next year.
