Post Office to Trial National Insurance Number Allocation

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

The Post Office is taking part in an initiative exploring how their role can be developed in delivering front end services on behalf of Government.  In a cross-Department initiative with the DWP, three trials are taking place:

  •  Rural Signing
  •  Document Verification (for pension claims) and
  •  National Insurance Number Allocation

The NINO allocation will take place at three Post Offices instead of the usual Jobcentre Plus in the Bedford area.  The trial will be for a small group of NINO applicants for three months from October 2011.  During this time, the capability and effectiveness of the NINO allocation operation will be evaluated in terms of:

  • The integrity of the allocation process
  • Customer service and
  • Value for money

Comment

The Proof of Concept document, below, indicates that the trial is expected to have a positive conclusion, with a NINO allocation service that is easier more convenient to access.  We await the results of this pilot and hope that this proves to be true.  As long as there is an improvement in the allocation process, any move to make this a permanent arrangement would seem to be a welcome one.
