Autumn and early winter are seasons notorious for accidents. More work time is spent during hours of darkness, people feel gloomy, whatever – accident rates go up, so this is a good time to review the safety of your workplace. You may well have an active safety committee with keen safety representatives and regular inspections, but even so, recognise that their familiarity with your workplace may make them blind to some hazards. So bring together a group of innocents or vulnerable people such as a recent school leaver, an old person, someone with a mobility problem, a pregnant woman and someone from outside the organisation. Have them walk around the site and point out things that they see as hazardous. Report their findings to your safety committee and, as appropriate, take action to remove the real hazards. Do this and you may well save someone’s life or limb.
