Ni numbers, CIS penalties, security payments, childcare, subsistence scale rates, VAT and salary sacrifice, RTI update.

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Last week we reminded you about the increase in the national minimum wage, a feature of October every year.  New penalty rules for late filing of CIS monthly returns were also expected to be brought into play from October and the effective date has now been announced as 6 October.  We have a reminder this week of how the new penalties will work.

Also on the agenda for every employer from 1 October 2011 are the new equality rules for temporary agency workers.  In Acas’ recent press release, employers are warned that “they could face a fine up to £5,000 from an Employment Tribunal if they break the new law. The fine would be multiplied by each temp they wronged.”

Further information is now available from HMRC on the VAT implications of benefits supplied under salary sacrifice arrangements.  In some specific situations, VAT will not be chargeable until a date later than 1 January 2012.
