Each week we receive a number of payroll questions on our forum, and here are this week’s batch. Can you help with any answers?

I would normally have received £633 for working the four weekends in September but my employer deducted £252 because I left on 19 September and did not work the final weekend.  Can this be correct?

I work weekends ONLY and my basic pay rate is £633. I left the company on the 18th of September 2011 and they have deducted the basic pay rate adjustment of £252 from my pay. I have called HR and they said this £252 deduction is calculated as pay from 19-30th September 2011 which I did not work.

Further questions from our forum:

1. Since April 2011 we have calculated NICs on mileage payments that exceed 40p instead of 45p.  How do we reimburse the NICs over-deduction to employees who have left?
2. A sick employee, in receipt of SSP, attended for a day’s training.  Do I pay him for the day and pay one day’s less SSP, or pay full SSP and top up the SSP for the day to his normal daily rate?
3. Can anyone recommend a useful textbook on payroll basics?
4. How do we handle the payments for bank holidays while SMP is being paid?
