Hopefully, as you read this, the sun will be shining in through your office window and you will be basking in a glorious early summer. Except that, if it becomes really hot, you may be feeling somewhat uncomfortable. You therefore need to prepare for heatwaves and the discomfort they may cause your employees. You are required by law to maintain a reasonable temperature but, providing you are taking reasonable steps to minimise the discomfort to employees, they themselves are expected to be reasonable. That’s three “reasonables” in one sentence – and that really sums it all up. See what you can do to control workplace temperature by using air conditioners, opening windows and doors, and making cold drinks available to your employees. Perhaps even relax dress codes provided you maintain decency. Do what you can, listen and respond to any suggestions that your employees make, and they then are likely to continue working normally.
