Handling requests for “time to train”
Friday, February 25th, 2011The right of employees to make a formal request to their employer for time off to undertake study and training was introduced in April 2010 in organisations with 250 or more employees. The intention was to extend the right to all organisations from April 2011.
However, following a consultation exercise in summer 2010, the Government announced in February 2011 that the extension of the right to all organisations will not take place in April 2011. It will continue for now to apply only to those with 250 or more employees.
Guidance for employers is available on the Business Link website. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has recently published a booklet containing example scenarios of how employers in a variety of different industries can handle requests from employees for time off to train.
