NI Number – RD3 Plastic card to be replace with a letter

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

On 10 September, the Government announced that, with immediate effect, requests for replacement cards will be met by means of a printed letter and, from 2011, the plastic card will be replaced completely by a printed letter.   The change is expected to save £100,000 in 2010/11 and up to £1 million each year thereafter.

The NI number card is not an ID card and is not intended to be carried round as if it were.  It is simply a reminder of a person’s NI number and can be kept with other personal tax documents.

The idea was among over 100,000 cost-saving suggestions submitted in response to the Coalition government’s Spending Challenge.

The RD3 credit card size NI Number card is issued to young people 3 months before their 16th birthday and to migrant workers.  Replacement cards are issued to those who lose them.
