Holiday policy problemsThursday, September 9th, 2010
Yet again holiday problems have been a source of worry to many HR people we speak to. Most have, as they see it, adequate holiday policies in the sense that employees are told how much time they can have off in a year, how they will be paid, and what happens if they fall sick at holiday time. But the questions we are asked are about when people can take their holidays, what if the organisation is busy at that time, and what if several people want their holiday at the same time. We have to respond that we cannot provide answers as the law does not define these matters but leaves it to individual employers to sort out with their people. Well, whether you have had problems or not this year, look at your current arrangements, address these questions and provide your employees with answers. Involve your employees to make sure that you receive a strong feeling of what they feel is fair, for example which employees get priority if there is a clash of holiday requests. Try to blend this comfortably with your business requirements, then publish the result. Do this now and you will be all set up for the coming year. Who says we do not listen to our colleagues!
