PAYE Services – HMRC upgrade to computer systems

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Starting in June 2009, HMRC began to upgrade its computer systems to bring all PAYE records together into a single system, accessible from all of its tax offices. The fully upgraded systems began to be available to HMRC staff from 29 June and will be in full use from 20 July.

As part of the systems upgrade, HMRC has created a new system called the “National Insurance and PAYE Service (NPS). (Why not NIPS?!) This brings together what used to be the National Insurance Recording System (NIRS) and the PAYE elements of Computerisation of PAYE (COP). HMRC’s upgraded systems process both NICs and PAYE so, although employers will continue to calculate and deduct PAYE tax and NICs separately, HMRC will process the deductions using the NPS system.
