The saga of the opt-out from the 48-hour average working week continues with the publication by the European Commission of its view of the amendments to the Working Time Directive passed by the European Parliament in December. Despite a willingness to compromise on a number of issues, the Commission is still resolved to reject any move to abolish the opt-out, despite the Parliament’s obstinate commitment to phasing it out. This story could go on for years yet.
We also have a date for this year’s Budget Statement from the Chancellor – a month later than in recent years. As, hopefully, we already know all of the PAYE and NICs changes for 2009/10, the late date should not be an issue – or has the Chancellor got something else in mind to challenge the adaptability of payroll staff?
