Paying PAYE tax and NICs – New option to pay by direct debitMonday, December 22nd, 2008
Employers registered for PAYE Online are now able to make monthly or quarterly payments to their Accounts Office by direct debit. The facility only allows single payments to be paid in this way as the amount to be taken must be entered in advance. Direct debit is an acceptable type of electronic payment, so the payment deadline is the 22nd of the month, or the last banking day before that date if it is a weekend day or bank holiday.
The first time the facility is used, the employer must complete a direct debit instruction at least five days before the first payment is to be taken. Subsequently, the payment must be set up at least three days before the due date. However, the payment can be set up days or weeks in advance, for example as soon as the payroll run is complete, so that the payment deadline is not missed. Similar direct debit facilities are also available for payments of Self-Assessment tax, Corporation tax and a number of other taxes and duties.
